Ingredients for air fryer halloumi burger
225g Halloumi, cut into 4 large squares
75g of cornflour
2 Tablespoons of paprika
Salt and pepper
4 Bacon rashes
2 Burger buns
1 Little gem lettuce, sliced
1 Red onion, peeled and sliced
6 Baby tomatoes, sliced
8 Cumber slices
2 tablespoons of runny honey
1 teaspoon of chilli flakes
Side salad to serve
2 tablespoons of Piri Piri mayonnaise
Method
Start by cutting your halloumi into quarters then set aside. In a bowl, combine cornflour, paprika, salt, and pepper. Then stir together to ensure they are well mixed.
Next, dip each piece of halloumi into the cornflour mixture, ensuring each side is fully coated. This will give the halloumi a crispy exterior when cooked. Once coated, lightly spray each piece with olive oil to help it crisp up in the air fryer. Arrange the halloumi pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure to leave some space between each piece for even cooking. Place the crisper plate in the basket to allow hot air to circulate properly. Set your air fryer to 190°C and cook for 10 to 12 minutes. Then Halfway through the cooking, turn the halloumi over for even crisping and add your bacon around the edges of the basket.
While the halloumi and bacon are cooking, slice your burger buns and pop them in the toaster for a slight crisp on the edges. Slice your tomatoes, cucumber, and onion, and wash and slice your lettuce. Then set aside, ready to assemble your burger.
Then in a bowl, mix together runny honey and a pinch of chilli flakes to create a sweet and spicy drizzle for your burgers. So once the halloumi is golden and crispy, and the bacon is cooked to your liking, remove them from the air-fryer.
To assemble the burgers, start by spreading a generous amount of piri piri mayo on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Layer with your sliced veggies, followed by the crispy halloumi and bacon. Drizzle with the sweet chilli honey sauce for an extra kick of flavour.
Serve your delicious air fryer halloumi burger with a side of fresh salad, potato wedges, or French fries!
Tips for Air Fryer Halloumi Burger
1. Use Thick Slices
Cut the halloumi into slices about ½ inch thick. Thin slices can dry out or get rubbery in the air fryer.
2. Pat Halloumi Dry
Blot the slices with paper towels before air frying. Less moisture = more browning and better texture.
3. Optional: Marinate for Extra Flavour
For added depth, marinate the halloumi in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, or herbs for 15–30 minutes. This boosts flavour without compromising texture.
4. Lightly Coat with Oil
Brush or spray with a little olive oil before air frying for an extra golden crust and to prevent sticking.
5. Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes. This helps create a nice sear on the outside.
6. Air Fry Time & Temp
Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway. Watch for a golden, crisp crust.
7. Use Parchment or a Rack
Use perforated parchment paper or a rack if your air fryer tends to stick. Halloumi can cling to the basket when heated.
8. Pair with Bold Flavours
Halloumi is salty and rich, so balance it with contrast:
Sweet: caramelized onions, mango chutney, grilled pineapple
Tangy: pickled onions, tomato relish, yogurt sauce
Fresh: arugula, lettuce, cucumber, or mint
9. Toast the Buns
Toast burger buns in the air fryer for 2–3 minutes at 350°F to add texture and prevent sogginess from sauces or toppings.
10. Build Quickly & Serve Hot
Halloumi firms up as it cools, so assemble your burger while the cheese is still warm and soft.
