Air Fryer Chicken Goujons

These fresh chicken goujons are breaded and fried strips of chicken, typically made from boneless chicken breast. They are similar to chicken tenders or chicken fingers but are generally smaller in size, making them perfect for snacking or serving as a meal. These golden chicken goujons are easy to make and can be cooked with minimal effort using an air-fryer. The best part about cooking them in the air-fryer is that it takes less time and energy compared to traditional deep-frying or pan-frying methods, which makes the process more convenient and efficient.

Not only does the air fryer cut down on cooking time, but it also requires far less oil, offering a healthier alternative to the deep-fried version. When you cook goujons in the air fryer, they achieve that perfect crispy texture without soaking up excess oil, making them a lighter option for anyone looking to enjoy a classic dish with a healthier twist.

Making crispy chicken goujons from scratch in the air-fryer is not only simple, but it also allows for full control over the ingredients. By using fresh chicken breast, you can ensure that the goujons are free from preservatives or unnecessary additives. You can even customize the breading by using different seasonings or breadcrumbs for added flavour. For an extra delicious touch, serve the goujons with a sticky honey mustard sauce for dipping – the sweet and tangy combination is the perfect complement to the crispy chicken.

These air fryer chicken goujons are not only easy to prepare, but they’re also a hit with the whole family. Whether you’re serving them as an appetizer, snack, or main dish, they are sure to be a crowd-pleaser that everyone will enjoy!

KIT you will need an air fryer and mixing bowls

Ingredients for Air Fryer Chicken Goujons

2 boneless and skinless chicken breasts, sliced

200g of all purpose flour

2 large eggs

250g of breadcrumbs (or panko breadcrumbs work best for extra crunch)

1 teaspoon of garlic powder

A teaspoon of onion powder

1 teaspoon of paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

Olive oil spray (for lightly coating the chicken)

Method

Start by preparing your chicken. Slice the chicken breasts into thin, evenly sized strips, roughly 2 cm wide – this will help them cook quickly and evenly, and give you perfect bite-sized goujons. Set the chicken aside while you prepare your breading station.

In a shallow bowl, combine plain flour with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well to ensure the seasoning is evenly mixed throughout the flour.

In a second bowl, crack in the eggs and whisk them to create your egg wash.

In a third bowl, add your breadcrumbs – panko works great for extra crunch, but regular breadcrumbs will also do the job.

Take each chicken strip and coat it first in the seasoned flour, making sure it’s evenly coated on all sides. Shake off any excess, then dip the strip into the egg wash, allowing the extra egg to drip off. Finally, press the chicken into the breadcrumbs, coating thoroughly and gently pressing so they stick well.

For extra crispiness, preheat your air fryer to 200°C for about 5 minutes. This helps the coating start to crisp as soon as the chicken hits the basket.

Lightly spray the chicken goujons with olive oil to help them turn golden and crispy. Place the strips in a single layer in your air fryer basket, leaving the crisper plates in. Avoid overcrowding – cook in batches if needed.

Air fry at 200°C for 8 to 10 minutes, turning halfway through to ensure an even, golden brown finish. The goujons should be crispy on the outside and cooked through inside.

Serve warm with your favourite dipping sauces – classic mayo, tangy honey mustard, sweet chilli, BBQ, or creamy ranch all work beautifully. Perfect for lunch, dinner, or even as a party snack!

Tips for Air Fryer Chicken Goujons

1. Use chicken breast or tenderloins
Slice boneless, skinless chicken breasts into even-sized strips. Chicken tenderloins work well too and need minimal prep.

2. Pat the chicken dry
Blot with kitchen paper to remove excess moisture as this helps the coating stick better and crisp up in the air fryer.

3. Season every layer
Season the flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs separately to pack flavour into every bite. Garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper are great starters.

4. Go for panko
Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch. You can mix in parmesan or herbs for added texture and taste.

5. Double dip for crispiness
For an ultra-crispy coating, dip the chicken in flour, then beaten egg, then breadcrumbs. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps for a thicker crust.

6. Lightly oil the coating
Spray the coated goujons lightly with oil before air frying. This gives you that golden, crispy finish without deep frying.

7. Preheat the air fryer
It is a good idea to pre heat your air fryer to 200°C (390°F) for 2 to 3 minutes before cooking. This will help the coating set and crisp up immediately.

8. Don’t overcrowd
Arrange goujons in a single layer with space between them. Airflow is key to an even, crispy result.

9. Cook time
Air fry for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through. They’re ready when golden and the internal temp hits 74°C (165°F).

10. Serve with dips
Serve hot with ketchup, mayo, sweet chilli, or homemade aioli for the ultimate snack or dinner side.
