So crispy, golden, and full of flavour, these air fryer sweet potato wedges are about to become your new go-to side dish. They are everything you love about traditional potato wedges with crunchy edges, fluffy centres, and that satisfying bite. But with a naturally sweet twist and far less oil. Using an air fryer makes them lighter, quicker, and so easy to get perfect every single time.
Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins A and C, making these wedges a delicious and nutritious alternative to regular chips. They pair beautifully with all kinds of mains. Think juicy burgers, grilled chicken, or a hearty salad for example. And they are just as good on their own with a creamy dip or dollop of hummus.
What I really love most about this simple recipe is how adaptable it is. You can keep them simple with salt and pepper, go smoky with paprika, or spice things up with chilli flakes and cayenne. They cook in under 20 minutes and require minimal prep. So they are just perfect for busy weeknights, family dinners, or quick lunches. Whether you are cooking for kids, guests, or just yourself, these air fryer sweet potato wedges are a guaranteed hit that you will come back to again and again.

KIT you will need an air fryer and a large mixing bowl
Ingredients for Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
2 medium sweet potatoes (around 500g total)
1 tbsp of olive oil
½ tsp of smoked paprika
½ tsp of garlic powder
A generous pinch of salt
¼ tsp of freshly ground black pepper
Optional: a pinch of chilli flakes for heat
Method
So start by pre-heating your air fryer to 200°C (390°F). This will help the wedges start cooking immediately and encourages that lovely crisp exterior.
Give your sweet potatoes a good scrub with a brush under cold running water. You can peel them if you prefer a smoother texture, but I love leaving the skin on as it crisps beautifully and adds more fibre. Slice each potato in half lengthways, then cut each half into evenly sized wedges about 1 to 2 cm thick. Keeping them the same size means they will cook evenly and crisp up at the same rate.
Then pop the wedges into a large mixing bowl. Drizzle over the olive oil, then sprinkle with smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and chilli flakes if using. Toss everything together until the wedges are fully coated and glistening. A rubber spatula or your hands work best to ensure each piece gets a good mix of oil and spices.
So Arrange the wedges in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Leave the crisper tray in to help the hot air to circulate. It’s so tempting to pile them in, but a little breathing room between the wedges is key for crispiness. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you might need to cook them in two batches.
Air fry for 15 to 18 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to turn the wedges and promote even cooking. When they’re done, the edges should be crisp and golden, and the inside soft enough to pierce with a fork.
Then tip the cooked wedges onto a serving plate and sprinkle with a touch of sea salt. So serve them hot with your favourite dip. I love garlic mayo, chipotle sauce, or even a cooling yoghurt dip with lime and coriander.
Tips for a Perfect Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
Getting the perfect texture when air frying sweet potatoes can be a little trickier than regular white potatoes because of their natural moisture. But these tips will really help you to nail it every single time:
1. Cut evenly:
Keep your sweet potato wedges as uniform as possible as this ensures every piece cooks at the same pace. And it prevents smaller ones from burning before the larger ones are done.
2. Soak for crispiness:
If you have the time, it really is preferable to soak your cut wedges in cold water for 30 minutes before cooking. This will help draw out excess starch and moisture, giving you extra crispy results. Just make sure to pat them completely dry with kitchen paper before seasoning.
3. Don’t overcrowd the basket:
The biggest mistake with air fryer wedges is overfilling the basket. The hot air needs to circulate freely to crisp the wedges up properly, so cook in batches if necessary. It really is worth it in the end!
4. Use a little oil:
You don’t need much at all, but that tablespoon of olive oil helps with browning and texture. If you prefer, you can use an oil spray for an even lighter finish.
5. Experiment with flavours:
Try adding some Cajun seasoning, peri peri mix, or curry powder for a spicy version of your wedges. For something sweeter, toss them in a little cinnamon and drizzle with honey after cooking.
6. Serve immediately:
Like all potato fries, crisps, chips and wedges, sweet potato wedges are best eaten fresh from the air fryer. They will stay crisp for around 10 minutes before starting to soften. So serve and enjoy them straight away while they are still so lovely and crispy.
