PREP 10 minutes
COOK 10 to 12 minutes
SERVES 2 people
KIT you will need an air fryer and baking paper.
Ingredients for air fryer pizza rolls
1 ready made pizza base mix, rectangle if you can
1 tablespoon of red pesto
200g of grated mozzarella cheese
2 teaspoons of dried oregano
10 slices of chorizo sausage
A handful of fresh basil leaves
A drizzle of olive oil
To serve:
Side salad
Mayonnaise or other dipping sauce
Method
To begin, roll out your shop-bought pizza base onto a clean, dry surface. This gives you a smooth, even starting point for your toppings. Start by spreading a generous layer of red pesto across the entire surface of the pizza base. Make sure it reaches all the edges so every bite is packed with flavour. Once your red pesto is evenly spread, sprinkle a good amount of grated mozzarella cheese on top. Try to distribute it evenly so that it melts nicely throughout.
Next, add your sliced chorizo sausage, spacing it out so each roll gets a delicious, meaty bite. Season the entire surface with a generous pinch of dried oregano for that classic pizza aroma and flavour. Scatter a few fresh basil leaves on top. Then finish by drizzling a little olive oil over everything to help it bake beautifully and enhance the flavours.
Now it’s time to roll it up. Gently but firmly roll the pizza base from one edge to the other, creating a log shape that resembles a giant sausage roll. Once you’ve got your roll, use a sharp knife to slice it into bite-sized sections, each about 3 inches or 5 centimetres in length.
Line your air fryer basket with baking paper to prevent sticking. Carefully place each pizza roll into the basket, leaving a bit of space between them so they can expand and crisp up evenly during cooking.
Cook the pizza rolls in the air fryer at 190°C for about 10 to 12 minutes, or until the dough turns golden brown and deliciously crispy.
Serve your pizza rolls as fun party nibbles or a tasty lunch option with a fresh mixed salad and your favourite dipping sauces – like mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, ranch, cheese dip, or hot sauce.
Tips for Air Fryer Pizza Rolls
1. Don’t overcrowd the basket
Space out the pizza rolls in a single layer with a little room between each one. This helps the hot air to circulate properly and ensures they get evenly crispy.
2. No need to thaw
You can cook frozen pizza rolls straight from the freezer as no defrosting needed. Just pop them in and let the air fryer do all the work.
3. Shake halfway through
Give the basket a good shake about halfway through cooking to help them brown evenly and prevent sticking.
4. Watch closely at the end
Pizza rolls can go from perfect to burst open quickly. Start checking around the 6-minute mark (at 190°C or 375°F) and pull them out as soon as they are golden and puffed.
5. Let them cool before biting
The filling gets very hot so let the rolls sit for around 2 to 3 minutes after cooking to avoid burning your mouth with molten cheese and sauce.
6. Add a flavour twist
Before cooking, lightly spritz them with olive oil and sprinkle over some garlic powder, Italian seasoning, or grated Parmesan for a more gourmet snack.
7. Serve with dips
Pair your pizza rolls with a side of marinara, ranch, or garlic dip for an extra hit of flavour. They are great for sharing!
8. Great for leftovers too
Do you have leftover cooked pizza rolls? Then reheat them in the air fryer at 160°C (320°F) for 3 to 4 minutes to bring them back to crispy perfection.
