Air Fryer Cheese Tarts

These air fryer goats cheese & caramelised onion tarts are a perfect weekend make. It’s simple to prepare and guarantees big flavours. Making it an ideal choice for entertaining without the fuss. With just a handful of ingredients, you can quickly create a dish that feels special. For convenience, I used store-bought caramelised onion chutney. Which saves time without compromising on taste. However, if you have a bit more time to spare, you can cook onions down slowly until they become sticky, sweet, and caramelised, creating a more intense flavour. Either way, the combination of creamy goats cheese and the rich, sweet onions is truly irresistible. Each bite offers a wonderful balance of textures, from the smooth cheese to the soft, sweet onions, all encased in golden, flaky puff pastry.

Goats cheese is a delicious and nutritious ingredient that elevates this dish. It’s a good source of high-quality protein, essential for muscle growth and repair, making it a great addition to any meal. Additionally, goats cheese contains beneficial fatty acids that support heart health. It’s also packed with vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A. Which plays an important role in maintaining healthy vision and immune function. The calcium found in goats cheese is crucial for keeping your bones and teeth strong, making it a great choice for overall health.

The combination of rich, creamy goats cheese and the sweet, sticky caramelised onions in a crisp puff pastry creates a mouth-watering symphony of flavours and textures. This dish not only tastes incredible but also provides a delightful balance of nutrients. Perfect for a weekend treat, these tarts are sure to impress your guests while providing a tasty, nutritious option for any occasion.

Ingredients for air fryer cheese tarts

1 pack of goats cheese

A packet of puff pastry

1 jar of caramelised onion chutney

1 Egg

Method

Start by rolling out your puff pastry on a clean surface. Once evenly rolled, use a small bowl to help you cut out small, neat circles of pastry. These will serve as the base for your little tarts. If you don’t have a bowl handy, you can use a cookie cutter or simply freehand it for a rustic look.

Next, lightly spray the pastry circles with a bit of olive oil. This will help the pastry crisp up beautifully in the air fryer. Then carefully tuck each pastry circle into the compartments of your silicone moulds. The silicone moulds are great for this recipe because they allow the pastry to bake evenly and hold its shape.

So for the filling, add a teaspoon of your chosen caramelised onion at the bottom of each pastry circle. The rich sweetness of the caramelised onion complements the tangy flavour of the goats cheese perfectly. After the onion, layer the goats cheese on top. If you like a stronger cheese flavour, feel free to add a bit more. The creaminess of the cheese really brings the tart together.

Once you’ve filled the moulds, place the individual cases into the air fryer basket. Set the temperature to 180°C and cook the tarts for about 10 minutes. Keep an eye on them as they cook, and be sure to check that the pastry is crisp and golden and that the cheese has melted beautifully. Depending on the size of your tarts and the power of your air fryer, you may need a little more or less time.

Carefully remove the tarts from the air fryer as they will be hot! These air fryer goats cheese and caramelised onion tarts are perfect when served with a crisp green salad, or they make delightful canapés for party snacks.

Tips for Air Fryer Cheese Tarts

1. Use pre-made pastry for ease
Shortcrust or puff pastry works beautifully for cheese tarts. Use ready-rolled pastry to save time and just cut into circles to fit your tart tins or silicone moulds.

2. Blind bake your tart shells
To avoid a soggy bottom, pre-bake the pastry cases in the air fryer at 180°C (356°F) for about 4 or 5 minutes before adding the filling. Prick the bases and weigh them down with baking beans or dry rice.

3. Choose melty, flavourful cheese
A mix of grated cheddar, mozzarella, or Gruyère gives great melt and flavour. Add a touch of cream cheese or a spoonful of crème fraîche for extra creaminess.

4. Add flavour boosts
Stir in chopped herbs (like chives or thyme), caramelised onions, mustard, or a pinch of smoked paprika into the cheese filling for more depth.

5. Cool your filling slightly before adding
Let the cheese mixture cool a little before pouring into the tart shells as this helps prevent curdling or pastry softening.

6. Don’t overfill
Fill the tarts just below the edge to avoid spillage as the filling puffs slightly while cooking.

7. Air fry at the right temp
Cook at 160°C (320°F) for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the tops are golden and the filling has just set. The centre should still have a slight wobble.

8. Let them cool before serving
Allow the cheese tarts to cool for at least 5 minutes before removing from the tins. This helps them firm up and makes them easier to handle.

These air fryer cheese tarts are quick, rich, and irresistibly cheesy so are just perfect as snacks, sides, or party bites!
