Air Fryer Flat Bread

I made these lovely little air fryer flat bread to accompany our pasta last night, and they were absolutely perfect! The combination of the warm, crispy flatbreads with the rich, hearty pasta sauce was simply divine. The flatbreads are incredibly versatile and can be served with a variety of dishes, or even enjoyed on their own with a delicious dip. The air fryer does an amazing job of cooking them evenly, ensuring they achieve a delightful crispness on the outside while maintaining a soft, chewy centre. This makes them the ideal bread to complement any meal, and they’re so easy to prepare!

These air-fried flatbreads are great for mopping up sauces, pairing with dips, or even as a side to soups, salads, and pastas. The edges become golden-brown and perfectly crisp, while the inside stays wonderfully soft and chewy, offering a satisfying contrast in textures. Adding sun-dried tomatoes gives the flatbreads a burst of sweet and tangy flavour that balances the savoury dough perfectly. They’re also incredibly adaptable, so you can tweak the recipe with your favourite herbs and spices. For an extra touch, I love brushing them with a bit of olive oil and sprinkling sea salt or fresh herbs just before serving to really enhance the flavours.

Whether you’re looking to add a homemade touch to your meals, or simply want a quick, tasty alternative to store-bought bread, these air-fried flatbreads are sure to become a staple in your kitchen. They’re perfect for everything from casual dinners to more formal gatherings, and the best part is they come together in no time. Enjoy the delightful combination of crispness and softness with every bite!

Ingredients for Air Fryer Flat Bread

250g of ready made bread mix

170ml of lukewarm water

Plain flour for kneading

A pinch of salt

Sun dried tomatoes, chopped

Method

For these delicious air fryer flatbreads, I used a sun-dried tomato bread mix as the base, which added a lovely depth of flavour right from the start. To give them an even bigger flavour boost, I finely chopped some extra sun-dried tomatoes and folded them into the mix. Just enough to get a punch of tangy tomato in every bite.

I followed the instructions on the packet, pouring the bread mix into a large mixing bowl and gradually adding lukewarm water while stirring. I mixed until a rough dough began to form, then left it to rest in the bowl for about five minutes. This allows the flour to fully absorb the water and gives the dough a head start on developing that chewy texture.

Next, I floured a clean surface and kneaded the dough for five minutes until it became smooth and elastic. I then left it to prove (rest and rise) for another five minutes. After that, I gave the dough a second knead – again for five minutes – to strengthen the gluten structure. Then covered it with a clean tea towel and let it prove for a little longer.

So once ready, I divided and shaped the dough into small, flat, pizza-sized rounds using my hands. They don’t need to be perfect. Part of the charm is their rustic look. Then I cooked each one individually in my air fryer at 180°C for around 8 minutes. I placed them on a piece of greaseproof paper to prevent sticking and avoid the bottom catching. So keep an eye on them, as some air fryers cook faster than others.

The result? Soft, flavourful flatbreads with crispy edges. They are perfect on their own, or served alongside dips, soups, or as a base for mini pizzas!

Tips for Air Fryer Flat bread

1. Use a Simple Dough:
Flatbreads don’t need yeast, just self-raising flour, plain yoghurt, and a pinch of salt make a quick and reliable base. You can also add herbs, garlic powder, or a drizzle of olive oil for extra flavour.

2. Rest the Dough:
Let the dough rest for at least 10 to 15 minutes before rolling. This relaxes the gluten and makes it easier to shape without springing back.

3. Divide Evenly:
Split the dough into equal portions for even cooking. Flatten or roll them out to around ½ cm thickness, thin enough to cook through but thick enough to stay soft.

4. Preheat Your Air Fryer:
Preheating for at least a couple of minutes at 180°C (356°F) will give the dough an instant hit of heat and encourages a nice rise and colour on the surface.

5. Cook in Batches:
Place one or two flatbreads in the air fryer basket at a time, depending on its size. Avoid overlapping or stacking as they need airflow to puff and brown properly.

6. Flip Halfway Through:
Cooking at 180°C for about 5 or 6 minutes total, flip the flatbreads halfway to get a golden finish on both sides.

7. Brush with Butter or Oil After Cooking:
As soon as they’re done, brush the tops with melted butter, olive oil, or garlic butter for extra softness and flavour.

8. Serve Fresh and Warm:
Air fryer flatbreads are best served warm. Pair with curries, dips, soups, or use them as a wrap base.

9. Freeze for Later:
You can freeze leftover cooked flatbreads and reheat in the air fryer for 2 to 3 minutes for a fresh-from-the-oven feel.

These quick, fluffy flatbreads are perfect for everyday meals and come together beautifully in the air fryer!
