Ingredients for air fryer steak sandwich
3 medium red onions, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon of olive oil
300g of sliced steak (lean cuts like ribeye, sirloin, or rump steak work best)
1 tablespoon of Bernaise sauce
1/2 a large baguette
Method
If you’re in the mood for a hearty, flavour-packed lunch that feels indulgent but is surprisingly quick to prepare, this air fryer steak baguette is the answer. Juicy steak, sweet balsamic onions, and creamy béarnaise sauce come together in a warm, crusty baguette – the ultimate sandwich upgrade.
Start by slicing your red onions into thin strips. Place them directly into your air fryer basket or a small ovenproof dish if needed. Drizzle over a little olive oil and a splash of balsamic vinegar, then stir to coat. Set your air fryer to 170°C and cook the onions for about 10 minutes, stirring halfway through. They should soften and caramelise, developing a rich, tangy sweetness.
While the onions are cooking, season your steak generously with salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Drizzle with a touch of olive oil. Once the onions are done, increase the air fryer temperature to 200°C and cook the steak for around 5 minutes, stirring or flipping halfway through. Adjust the time depending on how you like your steak – for medium-rare, 5 minutes should be perfect; for well done, add an extra minute or two.
Once cooked, allow the steak to rest for a few minutes before slicing it thinly. This helps the juices settle and keeps the steak tender.
To assemble, slice open a fresh baguette and spread a tablespoon of béarnaise sauce on the base. Layer in your sliced steak and top with the balsamic onions.
Serve with your favourite sides like crunchy crisps, golden wedges, or French fries. And enjoy a relaxed, satisfying lunch.
Feel free to customise with extras like rocket leaves, pickles, or a drizzle of hot sauce. However you dress it up, this air fryer steak baguette is a guaranteed winner all year round.
Tips for Air Fryer Steak Sandwich
1. Choose the right cut
So opt for tender cuts like ribeye, sirloin, or rump steak. These cook quickly and stay juicy, making them ideal for sandwiches.
2. Bring steak to room temperature
Take your steak out of the fridge around 20 to 30 minutes before cooking. This helps it cook evenly and prevents a tough texture.
3. Season simply but generously
A sprinkle of salt, pepper, and garlic powder is all you need. Let the flavour of the beef shine through.
4. Preheat your air fryer
Set it to 200°C (392°F) for 2 to 3 minutes. A hot basket means better searing and a quicker cook time.
5. Don’t overcook the steak
Cook the steak for around 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway. For medium rare, aim for an internal temperature of 55 to 57°C (130 to 135°F). Adjust time based on thickness.
6. Rest before slicing
Once cooked, let the steak rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing. This keeps the juices locked in for a more tender bite.
7. Toast your bread in the air fryer
Use crusty rolls or ciabatta. Lightly butter and toast in the air fryer for 2 to 3 minutes until golden and crisp.
8. Add flavourful extras
Sautéed onions, melted cheese, garlic mayo, rocket, or mustard all make excellent additions. Air fry cheese-topped steak slices briefly to melt before assembling.
9. Assemble while warm
Layer up the toasted bread, sliced steak, and toppings while everything is still warm so it all melds together beautifully.
Serve your air fryer steak sandwich with fries, salad, or crisps for a proper café-style meal. No frying pan needed!
