Air Fryer Onion Rings

So crispy, golden, and perfectly seasoned, these air fryer onion rings are a lighter, healthier twist on the classic deep-fried favourite. Whether you’re making them as a side for burgers, a party snack, or just something to dip into your favourite sauce while watching a film, these crunchy rings tick all the right boxes. So flavourful, fun, and seriously satisfying.

Using the air fryer means you get that irresistible crunch without needing to heat a pan of oil or deal with the greasy aftermath. It’s a cleaner, quicker way to cook, and thanks to panko breadcrumbs and a well-seasoned coating, you won’t be missing any of the traditional deep-fried indulgence. They’re crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with just the right amount of seasoning like garlic, paprika, and a subtle onion powder kick that enhances, not overpowers.

These onion rings also happen to be a great way to get creative in the kitchen. Want to go cheesy? Tehn Add some grated Parmesan to the breadcrumb mix. Craving spice? Toss in some cayenne or chilli powder. You can even make them gluten-free with the right flour and breadcrumbs.

Best of all, they’re quick to whip up, ready in under 15 minutes and cooked in batches for maximum crunch. Serve them fresh from the air fryer with dips like spicy mayo, garlic aioli, or classic ketchup, and watch them disappear fast.

Once you try these homemade air fryer onion rings, you may never go back to the frozen version again. They’re so crispy, moreish, and just as good as the pub version. Minus the extra oil.

KIT you will need an air fryer and 3 mixing bowls

Ingredients for Air Fryer Onion Rings

1 large onion, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rings

110g plain flour

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp smoked paprika

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

2 large eggs, beaten

1 cup breadcrumbs (panko works so great for extra crunch)

Optional: 50g grated Parmesan cheese (for extra flavour)

Method

So start by preheating your air-fryer to 180°C (360°F) for about 3 minutes. This step ensures the basket is hot and ready to give your onion rings that crisp finish from the very first batch.

While the air fryer is heating, prepare your dredging station. In the first shallow bowl, mix together the plain flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. This seasoned flour helps the egg stick to the onion rings and adds the first layer of flavour. In a second shallow bowl, beat the eggs until smooth. This will help the breadcrumbs cling to the rings. In a third bowl, add the breadcrumbs. If you’re using Parmesan cheese, stir it into the breadcrumbs now for extra crunch and a savoury, cheesy twist.

Now it’s time to coat the onion rings. Take one ring at a time and dip it into the flour mixture, making sure it’s fully coated. Then dip it into the beaten egg, letting any excess drip off, before pressing it gently into the breadcrumbs to ensure an even coating. So repeat this process with all the rings.

Arrange the coated onion rings in a single layer in your air-fryer basket. Don’t overcrowd them, leave space between each one to allow the hot air to circulate and crisp them up evenly. So you may need to cook in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.

Cook for 8–10 minutes, flipping the rings halfway through to ensure both sides turn golden and crisp. Keep an eye during the last few minutes, they can go from perfect to too browned quickly.

Once done, serve the onion rings immediately while they’re at peak crunchiness. Then pair with your favourite dipping sauce. So ketchup, spicy mayo, ranch, or garlic aioli are all great options!

Tips for Air Fryer Onion Rings

Making homemade onion rings in the air fryer is so quick and easy, but a few small tricks can take them from good to golden perfection. Whether you’re cooking for a party, a Friday night fake-away, or just a cheeky snack, these tips will help you get that ultimate crunch every time.

1. Choose the right onions
Large, firm white or yellow onions work best. They hold their shape well and give you those iconic thick-cut rings. Sweet onions also work if you prefer a milder flavour.

2. Slice evenly
So try to slice your onion rings to a consistent thickness, ½ inch is ideal. This ensures they cook at the same rate and stay tender inside while getting crispy on the outside.

3. Dry your onions
After slicing, pat the rings dry with kitchen paper to help the coating stick better. Excess moisture can prevent the breadcrumbs from crisping up properly.

4. Use panko breadcrumbs
For extra crunch, opt for panko over regular breadcrumbs. They’re larger, lighter, and crisp up beautifully in the air fryer.

5. Press the coating on well
Gently press the breadcrumb coating onto each ring so it adheres properly and doesn’t flake off during cooking.

6. Don’t overcrowd the basket
Air circulation is key in air frying. So arrange the rings in a single layer with space around each one. If necessary, cook in batches to keep them crispy.

7. Flip halfway for even colour
Turning the rings midway through cooking helps both sides get golden and crunchy.

8. Serve straight away
Air fryer onion rings are at their best right out of the fryer. If you’re making a large batch, keep them warm in a low oven while you finish the rest.

So with these tips, your onion rings will be irresistible every time!
