It is amazing how such a simple cooking method can create such a delightful treat.

One of the best things about these doughnuts is their versatility. You can get really creative with different toppings depending on your mood or what you have on hand. For example, you could drizzle them with melted chocolate or caramel for a more indulgent twist, or dust them lightly with powdered sugar for a classic look. The sweet and slightly spicy flavor of the cinnamon pairs perfectly with the soft doughnut, creating the ultimate comfort food.

These mini air fryer doughnuts are perfect for playdates, family movie nights, or when you just need something sweet in a hurry. They’re best served warm, straight from the air fryer, giving them a freshly made feel that’s hard to beat. Pair them with a cup of tea or coffee for a cosy treat, or take it up a notch by serving them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence. Whether you are hosting a casual gathering or just need a little sweet pick-me-up, these mini doughnuts will never disappoint.

SERVES 6 doughnuts

KIT you will need an air fryer and mixing bowls

Ingredients for Air Fryer Doughnuts

100ml milk (room temperature)

50g butter

7g sachet of fast action dried yeast

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

250g of plain flour

1/2 a teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

1 egg, beaten

For the glaze:

100g of icing sugar

2 tbs of milk

½ tsp of vanilla extract

Method

So start with combining the milk, melted butter, yeast, a teaspoon of the sugar and the vanilla extract into a bowl and leave for 8-10 minutes for the yeast to activate.

Then in another bowl, mix the remaining sugar, flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and the cinnamon.

Mix the beaten egg into the wet mixture, then fold in the dry ingredients. Knead the dough, if using a mixer use the hook on a medium speed for 5-8 mins until the dough is smooth and elastic. Or knead by hand for 10-12 minutes, until smooth.

Place the mix onto a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean tea towel and leave in a warm place for about 1 hr 30 mins until the dough has doubled in size. Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to around 1.5 cm thick.

Cut out your balls to about meat ball size, roll around in the palm of your hand to create a perfect, smooth ball. Put the balls on a lined baking sheet, and cover with a clean tea towel, you can leave to rise in the fridge overnight or leave on the side for around 45 minutes.

Place 2 or 3 balls in the air fryer basket, making sure they don’t touch. You may need to do this in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer. Cook at 180C for 5-6 mins, turning halfway, or until golden. Remove from the basket and leave to cool on a wire rack while you cook the remaining doughnuts.

Sift the icing sugar into a bowl and stir in the milk and vanilla extract. When the doughnuts have cooled, pour over the glaze making sure each one is covered. Leave on the wire rack for the glaze to set.

Tips for Air Fryer Doughnuts

1. Use ready-made dough for a shortcut
Making doughnuts from scratch can be rewarding, but if you’re short on time or just want a fuss-free option, ready-made dough is a brilliant shortcut. Look for biscuit dough, pizza dough, or even croissant dough in the refrigerated section of the supermarket.

2. Don’t overcrowd the basket
Air fry the doughnuts in a single layer with space between each one to allow for even cooking and a golden, crisp finish on all sides.

3. Preheat the air fryer
Preheating your air fryer to 180°C (350°F) for a couple of minutes will ensure a consistent cook and helps the dough rise evenly for that perfect soft interior.

4. Flip halfway through
Turn the doughnuts halfway through cooking to get even browning and a perfect golden crust on both sides.

5. Don’t overcook
Air fryer doughnuts cook fast! Start checking around 5 to 6 minutes, depending on thickness, to avoid drying them out.

6. Brush with butter after cooking
For extra flavour and that bakery-style finish, brush warm doughnuts with melted butter before adding sugar or glaze.

7. Roll in sugar while still warm
If using cinnamon sugar or regular sugar, coat the doughnuts while warm so it sticks evenly and gives you that classic crunch.

8. Let them cool before glazing
If you’re using icing or chocolate glaze, allow the doughnuts to cool slightly first otherwise the glaze may melt off.

9. Customise your fillings
For filled doughnuts, inject jam, custard, or Nutella after cooking using a piping bag or syringe.
