There’s nothing quite as comforting as a golden, gooey cheese toastie And making it in the air fryer takes this timeless classic to a whole new level. The result? A sandwich that’s perfectly crispy on the outside, irresistibly melty on the inside, and ready in a matter of minutes. This air fryer cheese toastie the ideal solution for a quick lunch, an after-school snack, or a cosy bite when you’re craving something warm and satisfying.

One of the best things about a cheese toastie is how customizable it is. Whether you love a sharp cheddar, a buttery gouda, or even a spicy pepper jack, your favourite cheese will shine through beautifully. Pair it with soft white bread for a nostalgic feel, or go hearty with sourdough or rye for extra crunch and flavour. You can even add extras like sliced tomatoes, caramelised onions, or a dash of mustard to make it your own.

Personally, I love to serve mine alongside a steaming mug of tomato soup – the classic combo never fails. Dunking those golden, crunchy crusts into the rich, velvety soup is pure comfort food bliss. It’s a simple pleasure that feels like a warm hug on a cold day. So next time you’re in need of an easy, satisfying treat, reach for the air fryer and whip up a cheese toastie that hits all the right notes.

KIT you will need an air fryer

Ingredients for Air Fryer Cheese Toastie

4 slices of bread (I used a white thick slied loaf

125g of strong grated cheddar cheese (other hard cheeses like Red Leicester, Gouda or Edam work equally well

1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce

2 tbs of milk

Sea salt and ground black pepper for seasoning

Vegetable spray oil

Method

In a large mixing bowl, combine the grated cheddar cheese, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and a splash of milk. Season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then stir everything together until it forms a thick, smooth, and spreadable paste. This cheesy mixture should be rich, tangy, and full of flavour – the perfect filling for your toastie.

Next, lightly spray one side of each slice of bread with cooking spray or brush with a little oil. This will help create a beautifully crisp and golden bottom when air fried. Preheat your air fryer to 190°C (375°F) for about two to three minutes to ensure it’s nice and hot.

Once preheated, place the slices of bread in the air fryer basket, sprayed side up, and cook for 2-3 minutes. This brief toasting helps firm up the bread slightly, making it sturdier and better able to hold the cheesy filling without going soggy.

Then carefully remove the bread from the air fryer and generously spread the cheesy mixture over the toasted side of each slice. Give the top of the cheese mixture a light spray. This encourages a golden, bubbling top when it cooks.

Return the bread slices to the air fryer, this time with the cheesy side facing up. Cook for 4-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbling, and starting to brown at the edges.

So once done, carefully place one slice on top of the other to form a deliciously gooey toastie. Serve immediately with a crisp, peppery rocket salad on the side for a fresh contrast to the rich, cheesy filling. Enjoy every bite of this indulgent, air-fried twist on a beloved classic.

Tips for Air Fryer Cheese Toastie

1. Butter the outside
Start by spreading butter or mayo on the outside of each slice of bread. This not only adds flavour but also helps the bread crisp up to that irresistible golden brown finish. Mayo works surprisingly well and adds a subtle tang!

2. Choose good melting cheese
For that gooey centre, pick cheeses that melt beautifully. Cheddar, mozzarella, Gruyère, or Monterey Jack are all great options. A blend of sharp and mild cheeses gives both creaminess and punchy flavour.

3. Don’t overstuff
It is easy to go overboard, but too much filling can cause spillage or uneven melting. Aim for a generous yet balanced layer of cheese and any extras like ham, tomatoes, or cooked bacon.

4. Preheat your air fryer
Preheating your air fryer for 2 to 3 minutes at 180°C (356°F) helps your cheese toastie start crisping the moment it goes in. It is a small step that makes a big difference in texture.

5. Secure with toothpicks (optional)
If your toastie is a bit tall or packed, then secure it with toothpicks to prevent the top slice from lifting due to the air fryer’s powerful fan.

6. Flip halfway through
For that perfectly even crunch, flip your toastie halfway through cooking (around the 4-minute mark) so both sides toast evenly.

7. Watch for browning
Cook times vary slightly by air fryer, but most cheese toasties take 6 to 8 minutes at 180°C. Keep an eye on the colour to avoid over-toasting.

8. Let it cool slightly before slicing
Give your cheese toastie 1 or 2 minutes to rest after cooking before cutting into it. This will help the cheese to set a little so it doesn’t ooze out, and saves your mouth from a molten surprise!
