KIT you will need an air fryer, mixing bowl and oven dish.

Ingredients for air fryer crumble

750g of fresh blackberries

75g of soft light brown sugar

For the crumble:

300g of plain flour

50g of soft light brown sugar

175g of cold unsalted butter

1 teaspoon of ground ginger

100g of granola (optional)

To serve:

Vanilla ice cream, double cream or warm custard

Method

Start by washing your blackberries to remove any dirt. Once clean, place them in an ovenproof dish. Then sprinkle over brown sugar to help draw out the natural sweetness of the berries as they cook. Next, place the dish in the air fryer basket and set the temperature to 160°C. Cook the blackberries for about 15 minutes, giving them a good stir halfway through to ensure they cook evenly and don’t burn. If you want to add a twist, you can mix in some chopped apples with the blackberries at the start of the cooking process. Just cook for an additional 10 minutes to soften the apples and allow their juices to meld with the berries.

While the blackberries are cooking, it’s time to prepare the crumble topping. In a large mixing bowl, add 300g of plain flour, 75g of soft brown sugar, and 175g of cold unsalted butter. Rub the butter into the flour and sugar using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, forming a light and crumbly texture. To add some extra sweetness and crunch, stir in 100g of granola at the end. This will give the crumble a delightful texture and a bit of extra flavor.

After the blackberries have cooked, carefully remove the air fryer basket and evenly spread the crumble mix over the top of the berries. Return the dish to the air fryer and cook for another 30 to 35 minutes at 160°C. Or until the crumble is golden brown and the fruit is tender and bubbling. If the crumble is browning too quickly, you can loosely cover it with foil to prevent burning.

Once cooked, remove the blackberry crumble from the air-fryer and allow it to cool slightly. Serve warm with a dollop of cream, custard, or, vanilla ice cream.

Tips for Air Fryer Crumble

1. Use fresh or frozen blackberries.
Both work well! If using frozen, don’t thaw them, toss them in a bit of cornflour (cornstarch) first to help absorb extra moisture during cooking and avoid a soggy crumble.

2. Add a touch of sweetness and spice.
Blackberries can be tart, so balance them with a little sugar or honey. A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg also enhances the flavour beautifully.

3. Don’t skip the flour or cornflour.
Mixing your berries with a spoonful of flour or cornflour helps thicken the juices as they cook, preventing your crumble from being too runny.

4. Make a chunky, crumbly topping.
Use cold butter and rub it into your flour and sugar mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add oats or chopped nuts for extra crunch and texture.

5. Use an air fryer-safe dish.
Choose a small ovenproof or air fryer-safe baking dish that fits comfortably in your air fryer basket. Ceramic or metal works best.

6. Preheat your air fryer.
Give your air fryer a 2–3 minute preheat at around 170°C (340°F) to help the crumble start cooking evenly from the start.

7. Check during cooking.
Air fryers vary so check your crumble around the 10-minute mark. The topping should be golden and the fruit bubbling underneath. Total cook time is usually around 12–15 minutes.

8. Let it rest.
Give your crumble a few minutes to cool before serving. This allows the filling to thicken slightly and the topping to firm up.

9. Serve with something creamy.
Vanilla ice cream, Greek yoghurt, or custard all make perfect pairings with a warm, tangy blackberry crumble.
