I had the pleasure of cooking this easy, healthy recipe with Alexis Conran on the Channel 5 TV show Air Fryers: An Easy Way to Lose Weight, which first aired on 28th February 2024.
PREP 5 minutes
COOK 15 – 20 minutes
KIT you will need an air fryer and a mandolin.
Ingredients for Air Fryer Apple Crisps
2 Apples (I used Gala but most other apple varieties work well)
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
Cooking spray (optional)
Method
These air fryer apple crisps are the perfect healthy snack – sweet, crunchy, and naturally delicious with just a hint of warm cinnamon. Start by selecting your apples. You can use any variety, but sweeter types like Pink Lady, Gala, or Fuji work particularly well. Using a mandolin slicer, carefully slice your apples into thin, even pieces. This ensures that they cook uniformly and develop that lovely crisp texture. If you don’t have a mandolin, a sharp knife will do the job – just take your time and be cautious.
Once sliced, lay your apple rounds flat on a chopping board and sprinkle over a light dusting of ground cinnamon. I like to do this in batches to avoid overcrowding the air fryer, which is key to getting that perfect crunch.
Preheat your air-fryer to 140°C and leave the crisper plates in. Place the apple slices in a single layer in the air-fryer basket and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Flip the slices every few minutes to help them dry evenly. The exact cooking time can vary depending on your air fryer model and the size and thickness of your apple slices, so keep a close eye on them. The crisps should be golden and just beginning to curl at the edges when they’re ready.
Once done, transfer the crisps to a cooling rack and let them sit for a few minutes. They’ll continue to crisp up as they cool.
I shared this recipe while filming with Alexis Conran for Channel 5’s “Air Fryers: An Easy Way to Lose Weight”, and it was such a joy to showcase how easy healthy snacking can be. These apple crisps are a shining example – simple, wholesome, and oh-so-satisfying. Enjoy them straight from the bowl or pack them as a crunchy snack on the go!
Tips for Air Fryer Apple Crisps
Air fryer apple crisps are a simple, healthy snack that’s naturally sweet, crunchy, and packed with flavour. Follow these tips to get them just right every time:
1. Choose firm apples
Use firm, sweet apples like Fuji, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp. These hold their shape and become beautifully crisp without turning mushy.
2. Slice thinly and evenly
Slice apples as thinly and evenly as possible, ideally around 2–3mm thick. A mandoline slicer works best for consistent results. Thin slices = crispier chips.
3. Core if you prefer
You can leave the core in for a rustic look or use an apple corer before slicing. Either way works, it’s just a matter of preference.
4. Optional: soak in lemon water
Soaking slices in lemon water for 5 minutes helps prevent browning and keeps the apple flavour fresh. Be sure to pat them dry afterwards.
5. Don’t skip the seasoning
A light dusting of cinnamon or apple pie spice brings out warm, cosy flavours. You can also add a tiny pinch of sea salt to balance the sweetness.
6. Preheat your air fryer
Preheat to 160°C (320°F) for 2–3 minutes. This ensures even, consistent crisping from the start.
7. Lay them in a single layer
Spread slices out in a single layer with minimal overlap. If needed, cook in batches for the crispiest texture.
8. Flip halfway through
Turn the apple slices halfway through cooking (around the 10-minute mark) to help both sides crisp up evenly.
9. Let them cool completely
Apple crisps will firm up more as they cool. Let them rest on a wire rack for maximum crunch.
10. Store in an airtight container
Keep them in a sealed jar or container to maintain crispness, perfect for snacking all week!
